Stefan Jamneck of the Transkaroo Restaurant in Great Brak River is the Gastro Nomix Chef of the Year for 2011. He was given this prestigious award at the annual CXPRESS Garden Route Culinary Awards evening which took place on Monday at the brand new stylish Salina’s Beach Restaurant in Wilderness.

The runner up was Alma Oosthuizen  of Chef Alma @ Groenvlei. The Gannet Restaurant in Mossel Bay is also one of the Top 20 restaurants in the vicinity.The cream of Garden Route restaurateurs, chefs and servers were there to share in the fun while the Top 20 restaurants in the area were announced. This year the function was graciously sponsored by Nell-Marie le Roux from NLR Wines.

Chef Francois Ferreira headed the Panel of Judges

Celebrity Chef Francois Ferreira,  Bailli Délegué of the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs South Africa and foodie par excellence Anne Hadley spear headed the panel of judges. Anne’s late husband and long-time CXPRESS food critic, Ian Hadley, was the initial driving force behind the Gastro Nomix Top 10 Garden Route restaurant awards more than a decade ago. Recently the official nod was received from the South African Chefs Association, who declared the awards a nationally recognised event.

The other floating trophies went to the following persons

Charities along the Garden Route are being  invited  to tell Algoa FM listeners about the work they are doing

Are you a charity organisation that is battling to get your message through to the public or who needs assistance to carry on the good work? Exceptionally good news  just before the festive season is that charities along the Garden Route are being  invited  to tell Algoa FM listeners about the work they are doing and the needs in the community.

Algoa FM is broadening their footprint and they will be broadcasting to the communities of Mossel Bay, George, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay etc.

Algoa FM is broadening their footprint and they will be broadcasting to the communities of the Southern Cape including Mossel Bay, George, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay as from Thursday 1 December. The Algoa Cares radio feature broadcasts info about charity organisations to give them the necessary exposure they need. As part of their service to the Southern Cape, the radio station is “doubling up” the time it devotes to promoting community organisations, as well as charitable activities and events, says managing director Dave Tiltmann.

Algoa FM starts broadcasting as from 1 December 2011 to the Garden Route

In addition to the Wednesday Algoa Cares interview with charities working in the Algoa FM listening area, the station will be broadcasting a community Info Slot. This will cater for the charities in the Garden Route, to which Algoa FM starts broadcasting in December. “We did not want to have to turn away the charities we have been supporting since 1997 in order to cater for our expanded reach down the Garden Route,” Tiltmann says.

Two of the well known charity drives that Algoa FM supports on an annual basis are the Winter Woolly Week and Bloodline Day. These causes are supported during the year, in addition to the weekly interviews with charity spokespeople, who are also free to ask for donations.

The Winter Woolly Week, which took place from 13 – 17 June this year, focuses on the collection of clothes and blankets for those in need. The project is a crucial element in the Community Chest’s annual fundraising programme. The clothing collected brings warmth to so many needy out there. The Community Chest also does a cash collection in order to feed the many hungry people in the Port Elizabeth Metro. The Chest’s – pap project makes a huge difference in many lives in the Metro.

For the Bloodline Day Algoa FM teams up with the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) in hosting a drive where the aim is to collect 800 units of blood in one day. The project is conducted in different areas in Port Elizabeth and East London.

The inserts supplied by the Southern Cape charity organisations will be hosted by Roy Williams and will be broadcasted just after the 12:30 news headlines.

Winter is something of the past. Although we had good catches of  Hake and Red Fish during the winter the Cob was just gone. I am glad to say that during our fishing trips the past few weeks we were lucky to have some good cob catches. On the other side I do not think it is all about luck. Our skippers with years of experience of the Mossel Bay fishing grounds play a great role in taking our trippers to the fish. We expect that Cob will be getting more as we are nearing the summer and the temperature of the sea water will rise.

Miss Garden Route and Klein Karoo 2011 Finalists

On Saturday 01 October 2011, Miss Garden Route and Klein Karoo 2011 was crowned during a prestigious Gala Event held at the Pinnacle Point Hotel and Beach Resort in Mossel Bay.

It was an evening that will keep the town of Mossel Bay talking for a while. Guests to this Gala Event were entertained by well-known South African artist, Nicholis Louw, who did a Elvis tribute and an excellent MC , Eloise Cupido, a Pasella Presenter.

The Miss Garden Route and Klein Karoo 2011 title was not the only title up for grabs. Zandrie Blom walked away with the title of Miss Photogenic, Tracey Anne Buckley with Miss Personality, as well as Miss Charity (which was awarded to the finalist who sold the most tickets to the Gala Event).

After seeing the 12 finalists, all equally deserving to carry the title of Miss Garden Route and Klein Karoo 2011, in various outfits ranging from swim wear, formal evening wear, as well as 20’s style designer wear, the top 5 finalists were announced: Donique Leonard, Tracey Anne Buckley,Vujiseka Koppies, Chanieël l du Plessis and Zonke Frans .

Only one finalist could however walk away with the title of Miss Garden Route and Klein Karoo 2011, and the winner was Zonke Frans. Zonke is a 23 year old from Knysna. She impressed not only the judges, but also guests at the gala event with her answer to the question; what is her purpose in life. Her answer was simple yet striking, to be successful in everything she sets her mind to.

Chanieël du Plessis, a 21 year old from Mossel Bay was crowned 1st princess and Tracey Anne Buckley, a 23 year old from Mossel Bay was crowned 2nd princess.

Designer of the year title of Miss Garden Route and Klein Karoo 2011

The event is also a platform for local designers to compete for the title of Designer of the Year title at the Miss Garden Route & Klein Karoo 2011. The six designers from the Southern Cape region designed two outfits each to dress the 12 finalists for the grand finale of the pageant and the winner of the title was Jeanine Barnard. She designed the dress worn by Jody Calitz, as well as the dress worn by last year’s winner Marizanne Visser at the Gala evening. She loves playing with colour and designs inspired by nature.

The Miss Garden Route and Klein Karoo is a well known community driven beauty pageant in the Garden Route and is in aid of regional shelters for battered and abused  woman.

This year’s finalists were announced last night at the Garden Route Casino Hotel in Mossel Bay. The 12 finalists all equally deserving to carry he title of Miss Garden Route 2011.

Jewellery designer, Mark E has donated a specially designed piece to the winner of the Miss Garden Route & Klein Karoo competition.

During the past few years, local jewellery designer, Mark E has donated a specially designed piece to the winner of the Miss Garden Route & Klein Karoo competition. This year, Mark Furness will once again honour the beautiful girl with one of their designs. As an addition the winner of the safe house make-over competition will also receive an exclusive piece of jewellery.

The Furness family, who are the owners of the exclusive Mark E Design label, have been in the jewellery industry since 1903.  Bardins Jewellers, one of the country’s oldest family jewellery firms, was formed in Mossel Bay during that year. Almost a century later the Mark E Design label was born from the Bardins stable. Today Bardins is still a family business with several branches in the Southern Cape.

At Mark E they believe that jewellery should be the extension of a woman’s personality and that it should emphasise her natural beauty.

According to Mr Mark Furness, who is one of the designers at Mark E, it is an absolute privilege to design something special for Miss Garden Route & Klein Karoo.  “We strive to  capture the essence of each of the women that wear our jewellery” he said. During the past eight years the winners have all made their mark in the beauty and modelling industry.

Each piece of jewellery designed at Mark E is done exclusively to the needs and preferences of the owner. This is done by the chief designer, Ms Sue Furness. This lady is a jewellery expert and loves to wear beautiful designs. She has more than 40 experience in the industry and her exclusive designs are worn by some of the country’s best known and influential women.

Her son Mark is in the process of stepping up to her and he already has his own range, the Mark Edgar Collection. He subscribes to his mother and his grandmother’s philosophy  that jewellery should be worn and not be kept in a safe or drawer somewhere.

Who will bet the Designer of the Year  at the Miss Garden Route  and Klein Karoo Pageant

Two Mossel Bay fashion designers will be in the run for the Designer of the Year title at the Miss Garden Route & Klein Karoo 2011 pageant at the gala evening planned for 1 October at the Pinnacle Point Beach and Golf Resort. The rest of the lineup consists of a designer from Great Brak, two from George and one from Uniondale. The six designers from the Southern Cape region will each design two outfits to dress the 12 finalists for the grand finale of the pageant.

Four of the designers that will take part in the Designers Competition, which forms part of the Miss Garden Route and Klein Karoo 2011 project, recently showcased some of their designs. A new resident, Thabo Direko, is originally from Parys in the Free State. He is a creative designer who has now based himself in Mossel Bay. Thabo got involved in the Miss KwaNonqaba pageant and was noticed by our own Mr Western Cape 2011, Vuyo Mfumbe. Thabo now makes sure that Vuyo steals the limelight wherever he performs.

The second Mossel Bay designer is Susan Moodie, who was also one of the designers at the 2010 competition. Susan has an African flair and makes sure that her models look stunning in her African inspired creations.

Bianca Boshoff is a young designer from Great Brak River. She also took part in last year’s competition.

One of the George designers is Jeanine Barnard who designed the dress worn by last year’s winner Marizanne Visser at the gala evening. She loves playing with colour and designs inspired by nature.

A brand new resident to the Southern Cape, Mariëtte Hankey is an experienced lecturer in fashion design. She and her family moved to Wilderness and she has just opened The Fashion Design Training Studio in George. Mariëtte has for many years designed and supplied clothing under her own label: Martezi.

Juan-Loui from Uniondale also took part last year. He moved from Pretoria to Uniondale and specializes in romantic, elegant and very feminine fashions. “The more expensive the material, the better” he added.

What makes the competition so special is that the designers have only five days to complete two outfits. Each designer will draw the names of two finalists on the Monday before the pageant. Up till then they will have no idea of who they will be designing for. The basic outfits can be made up, but they will only be able to take the measurements on that evening. The designers will then have to make and fit the garments for the grand finale within five days.

The winning designer will walk away with the title as well as a cash prize of R5 000 sponsored by Die Burger. A feature on the winning designer will also be published.

The Master of Ceremonies for the gala evening is Eloise Cupido. She will be joined on stage by the special artist, Nicholas Louw. An array of celebs will also rub shoulders with the guests and finalist. Natasha Sutherland and Sandra Prinsloo only two of the ladies that have pledged their support for this project.

Mossel Bay Town Festival

The community of Mossel bay is busy preparing for the second annual Kraak-i-Mossel Festival. The festival will be held the weekend of the 9th till 11th of September 2011. Guests to the festival can expect lots of fun activities for young and old. All the festivities will take place on the Point Caravan Park ground in Mossel Bay.

Mossel Bay Town Festival will be taking place in September 2011

The festival is the initiative of Juanita Pienaar. She did some research regarding Mossel Bay and realized that the beautiful town of Mossel bay doesn’t really offer locals and tourists a festival truly Mossel Bay, such as a Mossel Bay Town Festival. According to Juanita, she sat down with colleagues to brainstorm a name for the festival; Mossel Bay Town Festival was one of these possibilities.

The Kraak-i-Mossel Festival started in 2010 and had almost 2500 visitors. Last year the duration of the festival was four days, it however only lasted three days due to unforeseen weather conditions. This year the organizers wish to make the festival an even bigger success.

Kraak-i-Mossel Festival aims to help the Less Fortunate Communities

The main aim of the Kraak-i-Mossel Festival is to generate funds for the less fortunate communities. The organizers of the festival are working along with other organizations such as Dynamic Dance academy, as well as Jounou Art Foundation.

The 2011 Kraak-i-Mossel Festival will be a festival not to be missed. The Festival offers a number of excellent shows, entertainment as well as stalls and the crowning of Miss Mossel Bay 2011.

Hennie Jacobs, better known as Diederick from 7de laan also be performing at the Kraak-i-Mossel Festival as well as Munro du Toit and four locals from the Lagnes team, a new popular show on Kyknet.

The Kraak-i-Mossel Festival will also be a platform for performers that will otherwise never have the chance to perform on stage. Guests can enjoy a huge variety of stalls such as food stalls, mosaic, woodwork, beads, honey and lots more.

Entertainment for children at the Kraak-i-Mossel Festival

The organizers of the Kraak-i-Mossel made provision for entertainment for children and got a company called Blue Flames Events, specifically to entertain them. Kids can enjoy DVD Stations, PlayStations, Clowns, Paintball, Carnival Rides as well as a Touch Farm.

Seal Island Trips onboard the Romonza in Mossel Bay

The Romonza is a well-known tourist attraction in Mossel Bay and takes a large number of tourists around seal island each year. Here is some interesting information regarding the Romonza for those who already embarked on a trip or those who are planning a trip onboard the Romonza in Mossel Bay.

Passenger Boat in Mossel Bay for Island Trips

The Romonza was not initially built for what it is used for today. Wim Klapwyk built the yacht to embark on a trip around the world. It took him 7 years to complete the project after which he first only played with it in the bay of Mossel Bay. It was only while doing this that he realized that his wife got motion sickness and the trip around the world only a dream. He then just used the boat to explore the bay and went around Seal Island. People soon started to ask him to take the along when he went around the Island and this was how the Romonza started as a passenger boat.

According to Charmaine, Wim Klapwyk asked his children to give him a name for the boat and they came up with the name Romonza. They took all three their names and added it; Robert, Monica and Zandra.

The Romonza offers the tourist a variety of activities such as Island Trips, Sunset Cruises, Ocean Safaris and Whale Watching Trips. They are also more than willing to accommodate people with whatever their needs are. They had private weddings, engagements as well as occasions when people wanted to through their relatives ashes into the ocean.

When Trolling in Mossel Bay you can catch Bonito

The crew likes to troll when they take the boat out for a trip. They are most likely to catch Bonito when they troll. Tourists enjoy this because they can see the bait on the surface and it is an experience to see when a fish takes the bait. There is an air of excitement on the boat as the crew shouts “Strike!” The captain stops the boat and the catch is bought in and weighed.

The Romonza is almost synonym to Mossel Bay as sand is to a beach. The Romonza had its maiden cruise in 1976 and its first trip as a passenger boat in 1978. It is still the same boat as the first day it set of sailing.

Whale Watching in Mossel Bay

The whaling season starts from middle June to middle October however there is some occasions when people still saw whale here in the bay in November. The Romonza crew mostly spotted the whale in the area between Hartenbos and Reebok. The most whales that they counted over a season period were 36 whales. Charmaine said they see an average of 4 to 6 whales being born in the bay each year.

Mossel Bay Harry Giddey Park

The Harry Giddey Park in Marsh Street in Mossel bay is a hidden jewel, event to some locals, right in the centre of town.

The Park was first laid out as Victoria Park in the grand English manner in 1887. In the 1940’s it was extensively upgraded by Harry Giddey, after whom it was renamed. The historic gates at the southern entrance were erected in 1903 to commemorate the Jubilee of the reign of Queen Victoria of Britain.

White Bengal Tiger Cubs at Jukani Wildlife Predator Park in Mossel Bay

Angelo and Mich, two white Bengal tiger cubs, arrived at Jukani Wildlife Predator Park in Mossel Bay during December 2008. Their arrival was the result of a request by a Wildlife breeding facility in the Free State Province to Jukani to assist them in importing four white Bengal tigers from Elmvale Zoo in Canada. Free State Province in SA does not allow the import of exotic species into the Province. Jukani is recognised by the authorities as a bona fide zoological facility and as such able to import animals. The request was agreed to by Jukani with the understanding that 2 tigers would stay at Jukani on loan and any progeny going to the facility in FS Province after the FS facility managed to acquire a permit for two of the four white Bengals to be kept in the FS.

White Bengal Tiger Male with Progressive Retinal Atrophy

In July 2009 a wildlife veterinarian specialist diagnosed Angelo the white Bengal tiger male with Progressive Retinal Atrophy, a genetic transferable and incurable disease that would leave him permanently blind. As a result of his disease he would need specialist and continued medical treatment, with a team of care takers that he trusts and accepts.

Uncertain Future awaits the Tigers

On supplying this info to the owner of the FS based facility they immediately replied that we should either buy the two animals, demanding a sum of R240 000-00 per animal, which was later raised to R250 000-00 each, or they would remove and / or sell them to somebody else, irrespective of our plight that Angelo cannot be used as a breeding male and that he is reliant on Mich, the female, acting as his eyes. Fortunately our written agreement makes provision for Jukani to have first option of purchase at an agreed market related price and we chose to exercise that right as a uncertain future awaits the tigers, should they be removed from our facilities.

Tiger Owners Exposed by Carte Blanche

In February 2010 the owners of the tigers and also the FS facility were exposed by Carte Blanche for the slaughtering of lions to sell the bones and body parts to the Chinese traditional medicinal market. Even though they had approval from the FS Department of Nature Conservation to slaughter the lions it is a highly controversial ethical issue resulting in a massive public outrage at their actions. We also determined that the owners of the tigers had previously also been on Carte Blanche as a result of their alleged involvement in supplying lions to canned lion hunting operators. Although all tiger subspecies are protected under CITES 1 regulations and the hunting of captive or wild tigers is banned internationally the fact remains that Angelo is going blind and that may allow the authorities in FS and North West Province to grant permission to destroy this animal by means of euthanasia in a trophy hunt or canned hunt. It is also a well known fact that poaching is a massive problem in SA with an inadequate number of officials not able to even “police” and manage legal facilities. Thus the illegal shooting of a protected animal in a canned hunt can slip through the filters quite easily. Fact of the matter is that Angelo is worth more dead than alive from a breeder’s point of view. His skin and body parts will fetch a very high price in the Chinese traditional medicinal market.

Jurg, Karen and the Jukani Team

Jurg, Karen and the Jukani team have raised Angelo and Mich from the age of 4 months and have: 1. Developed a very strong relationship with Angelo and have gained his trust with his reliance on his knowledge of his enclosure and his reliance on Mich and his caretakers, as is obvious for everyone to see. 2. Research on blind animals confirmed that Angelo can lead a good life as a blind animal provided that his specific needs are taken care of, this includes consistency in the caretakers working with him, his enclosure design not being altered, proper medical care and that Mich stays with him. 3. Angelo has the right of life, as he was bred to be in captivity and his medical condition is the result of human interference by means of inbreeding to achieve the monetary benefit of a white tiger. 4. Angelo should not be allowed to breed as this would compromise the genetic pool of white tigers even further. 5. It is a fact that very few facilities have the time and space to care for an animal suffering from blindness and most of these animals end up being neglected and abused physically and mentally.

Jukani raise funds to purchase the two white Bengal tigers

The decision was taken to raise funds via an international sms, facebook and internet campaign to purchase the two white Bengal tigers, Angelo and Mich to ensure and secure their future with Jukani. This campaign will also be used to raise awareness of this disease, the plight of these animals in captivity and to stop any abuse or neglect of animals suffering from medical ailments. We have all seen what a great friend and companion a trained guide dog can be for his blind human companion, why can’t we be true friends and companions to our animal friends suffering from and living in the lonely world of blindness? Kraak-i-Mossel Dorpsfees in Mosselbaai

Die gemeenskap van Mosselbaai staan in rep-en-roer want die naweek van 9 tot 11 September 2011 staan hul reg met die tweede Kraak-i-Mossel Fees hier in die pragtige kusdorp, Mosselbaai. Die fees vind plaas op die Punt Karavaan Park se terreine.

Die fees was ‘n inisiatief van Juanita Pienaar, wat navorsing gedoen het en besef het Mosselbaai is ‘n dorpie wat kan doen met nog ‘n behoorlike fees. Volgens Juanita het die naam na ‘n kopkrap-sessie ontstaan, ander voorstelle was ook onder andere die Mosselbaai Dorpsfees.
Verlede jaar wat ook die begin jaar van die Kraak-i-Mossel Fees was, het die fees ‘n besoekers tal van ongeveer 2500 gehad. Die fees was toe vier dae lank, maar het ongelukkig op dag drie uitgereën. Vanjaar bou die organiseerders voort om hierdie fees iets besonders te maak.

Kraak-i-Mossel Fees help Minderbevoorregte Gemeenskappe

Die hoof doel van die fees is egter om fondse te genereer om minderbevoorregte gemeenskappe van bystand te bied. Die organiseerders van die Kraak-i-Mossel Fees werk nou saam met groepe soos onder andere die Dynamic Dance Academy, sowel as Jounou Art Foundation, almal daarop uit om ander van hulp te wees.

Die 2011 Kraak-i-Mossel Fees gaan beslis ‘n fees wees wat jy nie wil misloop nie. Die propvol program en kwaliteit vermaak, met die brekende branders van die Punt in die agtergrond gaan alles saamspeel om ‘n besonderere fees  mee te bring.
