Stefan Jamneck of the Transkaroo Restaurant in Great Brak River is the Gastro Nomix Chef of the Year for 2011. He was given this prestigious award at the annual CXPRESS Garden Route Culinary Awards evening which took place on Monday at the brand new stylish Salina’s Beach Restaurant in Wilderness.

The runner up was Alma Oosthuizen  of Chef Alma @ Groenvlei. The Gannet Restaurant in Mossel Bay is also one of the Top 20 restaurants in the vicinity.The cream of Garden Route restaurateurs, chefs and servers were there to share in the fun while the Top 20 restaurants in the area were announced. This year the function was graciously sponsored by Nell-Marie le Roux from NLR Wines.

Celebrity Chef Francois Ferreira,  Bailli Délegué of the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs South Africa and foodie par excellence Anne Hadley spear headed the panel of judges. Anne’s late husband and long-time CXPRESS food critic, Ian Hadley, was the initial driving force behind the Gastro Nomix Top 10 Garden Route restaurant awards more than a decade ago. Recently the official nod was received from the South African Chefs Association, who declared the awards a nationally recognised event.

The other floating trophies went to the following persons

Over the years, Mike has worked hard to keep a consistent high standard of cuisine and service, and Clarke of the Karoo has become a destination restaurant on the R62.

Bird Watching in Knysna

As we are sure most bird watchers know, seeing a Knysna Loerie is a privilege, and regarded as very good luck.  That beautiful eye, and that stunning flash of red wings brings a new joie de vivre to the most jaded soul…. Phantom View River Resort has its own resident Loerie at our reception area, who is nesting in a large tree.

But what about the Narina Trogon?  This is one of the most elusive birds on the Garden Route, and one of the most special. Even experienced bird watchers  get very xcited about a sighting.  For those of you would like to use the resort for some serious bird watching, and if you’re after a ‘Trogon’, here’s a description:

The Narina Trogon, which measures up to 34cm from beak to tail, is a medium-sized largely green bird. The male has vivid green upperparts, greyish wings, bright red underparts and patches of blue skin on the face. The female has a brown face, a purplish green plumage, a blue circle around each eye and is duller red below. This unusual bird was named after Narina, the Khoikhoi (Hottentot) mistress of the French ornithologist François Le Vaillant, in the 18th century.

Jorika Brink is 26, and she’s that are bird – a genuine Knysna local, born and bred. Jorika’s career includes legal and estate agency work, and she’s also done a stint of Internet Marketing. With us she’ll be handling reservations, and also lending a hand with marketing.
Lani Burger is 28, and she’s our new reservationist. Lani has a long stint in the restaurant industry to her name, as well as some time in Human Relations, and Marketing. Her family are in Cape Town, where she was born, and she has some good friends in Knysna.

No Lightleys blog posting would be complete without something to make you smile or laugh out loud (humour makes the world go round, you know), so here it is:

Marty wakes up at home with a huge hangover. He forces himself to open his eyes, and the first thing he sees is a couple of aspirins and a glass of water on the side table. He sits down and sees his clothing in front of him, all clean and pressed. Marty looks around the room and sees that it is in perfect order, spotless, clean. So is the rest of the house. He takes the aspirins and notices a note on the table “Honey,breakfast is on the stove, I left early to go shopping. Love You!” So he goes to the kitchen and sure enough there is a hot breakfast and the morning newspaper. His son is also at the table, Eating.
Marty asks,” Son, what happened last night?” His son says, “Well, you came home after 3 AM, drunk and delirious. Broke some furniture, puked in the hallway, and gave Yourself a black eye when you stumbled into the door.” Confused, Marty asks, “So, why is everything in order and so clean, and breakfast is on the table waiting for me?”
His son replies, “Oh, that! Mom dragged you to the bedroom, and when she tried to take your pants off, you said, “Lady, leave me alone, I’m married!”

The weather this time of the year is gorgeous. There are still some really hot days, but its cooling off, and floating around on your own houseboat on the Knysna lagoon or the Kowie River is such a pleasure now.

Knysna Fishing Report

The fishing has been excellent with the recent cloudy and drizzly weather in both Port Alfred and Knysna,  and the good catches look set to continue, says Myburgh of Breezers.  Kob and Steenbras are coming out in the lagoon, and there have been some great catches at the Horseshoe.

In Port Alfred surf fishing has been active, and deep sea as well. Our man on the spot, Dave Drennan, says that on hot days it’s a good idea to go up the Kowie River and look for cool, shady spots. There the big ones lurk….

Well, its that time of year again….both our Knysna and Port Alfred operations are buzzing, and we are seeing many old friends – and quite a few new faces too.

We’d like to wish you all a very happy and blessed Christmas. It was quite a year, wasn’t it?  There’s a feeling of achievement at still being alive and well, and not taking this great experience called life for granted.

Lightleys has great plans for the new year, and we’ll keep you posted as they materialise.  We’re spreading our sails in a number of directions, and adding new attractions to the Lightleys Experience.

Vir die vissermanne is die huidige visvang omstandighede effe onseker weens die feit dat die oostewind die temperatuur van die see baie laat daal het.  N Week terug was dit so 18 grade, en vandag (Woensdag die 22ste) is dit 8 grade by Knysna en 11 grade by Port Alfred.

As die temperatuur so gou verander, is die vis nie te gretig om te eet, of selfs baie te beweeg nie.  Dan is dit beter om n rivier te kry wat min deur die gety geaffekteer is. In Port Alfred, byvoorbeeld, is die Grunter en die Kabeljou hoer op in die Kowie Rivier nog springlewendig, sowel as Leeries.

Steenbras is a coldwater fish, and is still biting well in the Knysna lagoon.

And now, here’s a chuckle in the spirit of the season: Three guys were fishing in a lake one day, when an angel appeared in the boat. When the three astonished men had settled down enough to speak, the first guy asked the angel humbly, “Ive suffered from back pain ever since I took shrapnel on the border … Could you help me?” “Of course,” the angel said, and when he touched the man’s back, the man felt relief for the first time in years. The second guy wore very thick glasses and had a hard time reading and driving. He asked if the angel could do anything about his poor eyesight. The angel smiled, removed the man’s glasses and tossed them into the lake. When they hit the water, his eyes cleared and he could see everything distinctly. Then, when the angel turned to the third guy, the spooked fellow put his hands out defensively and shouted:  “Dont touch me!  I’m on a disability pension……”

The story of Feathers of Knysna Arts and Crafts  began more than 21 years ago in the picturesque coastal town of Knysna.
