Stefan Jamneck from Great Brak River is the Gastro Nomix Chef of the Year for 2011.

Stefan Jamneck of the Transkaroo Restaurant in Great Brak River is the Gastro Nomix Chef of the Year for 2011. He was given this prestigious award at the annual CXPRESS Garden Route Culinary Awards evening which took place on Monday at the brand new stylish Salina’s Beach Restaurant in Wilderness.

The runner up was Alma Oosthuizen of Chef Alma @ Groenvlei. The Gannet Restaurant in Mossel Bay is also one of the Top 20 restaurants in the vicinity.The cream of Garden Route restaurateurs, chefs and servers were there to share in the fun while the Top 20 restaurants in the area were announced. This year the function was graciously sponsored by Nell-Marie le Roux from NLR Wines.

Chef Francois Ferreira headed the Panel of Judges

Celebrity Chef Francois Ferreira, Bailli Délegué of the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs South Africa and foodie par excellence Anne Hadley spear headed the panel of judges. Anne’s late husband and long-time CXPRESS food critic, Ian Hadley, was the initial driving force behind the Gastro Nomix Top 10 Garden Route restaurant awards more than a decade ago. Recently the official nod was received from the South African Chefs Association, who declared the awards a nationally recognised event.

Special Achievement Award went to Mike Clarke from Barrydale

This year the panel made an exception to the geographical criteria, i.e. just off the Garden Route track, in selecting Mike Clarke from Clarke of the Karoo in Barrydale. Mike was at the Beacon Isle Hotel for many years and then popularised Crabs Creek in Knysna. Over the years, Mike has worked hard to keep a consistent high standard of cuisine and service, and Clarke of the Karoo has become a destination restaurant on the R62.

Lalakoi Publishing Salutes the CXPRESS Culinary Legends

During the past decade of CXPRESS Culinary Awards, some of the restaurants have consistently performed so well that they have always claimed a place on the Top 10 and Top 20 lists. This year the judging panel suggested a new category called CXPRESS Culinary Legends, which are restaurants that have made the grade for three years and longer and especially those on the ‘Best’ list for three or more years.

Gesonde Eetpatroon Om Vet Af Te Skud

Die sanger Gerrie Pretorius (tweede van regs) en akteur Hennie Smit (Bertie van Egoli) het albei 5 kg verloor gedurende die aanvanklike kursus van die Professional Fat Elimination Programme. Die man agter hierdie gesonde eetpatroon wat die land aan die gons het, is sakeman Christo Strydom (regs) van Groot Brakrivier. Die ander twe plaaslike inwoners wat die aananklike kursus in Bleomfontein meegemaak het, is Walter le Roux van Groot Brakrivier (tweede van links) en joernalis Denise Lloyd (middel) van Mosselbaai.

Kurt Darren en Gerhard Odendaal (Vaatjie) verloor saam 20Kg

Die vet is behoorlik in die vuur en die land is aan die gons oor kunstenaars soos Vaatjie (Gerhard Odendaal) van Mollie en Wors-faam en Kurt Darren se nuwe lywe. Die twee is sigbaar ligter en het die gehore onder andere by Aardklop en by die Idols-finaal laat vrae vra oor hul geheim. Vaatjie het reeds altesaam 12 kg afgskud en Kurt net meer as 8 kg.

6 Persone onder andere Gerrie Pretorius en Hennie Smit verloor 40 Kg

Nog twee kunstenaars Gerrie Pretorius en Hennie Smit (Bertie van Egoli) en twee Suid-Kapenaars, Walters le Roux van Groot Brakrivier en die joernalis Denise Lloyd van Mosselbaai glimlag net so breed. Altesaam het die ses
bykans 40 kg (omgeskakel in 80 x 500g blokke botter) in ses dae verloor
met ‘n nuwe eetpatroon en die langdurige handhawing van ‘n gesonde eetwyse.

Die man agter die groep se nuwe lywe is Christo Strydom van Riversyde in Groot-Brakrivier.

Strydom, wat ook die eienaar van Bains Lodges International is, is die brein agter hierdie projek wat hy as ‘n “nie-blits dieêet” beskryf nie maar eerder as ‘n gesonde eetpatroon wat daarop geskoei is om jou nooit te laat honger ly nie. Dit bestaan uit ‘n groentesop as basis wat met natuurlike voedsel en geen bygevoegde chemiese middels of pille aangevul word nie. Strydom self het ongeveer 23 kg met hierdie eetpatroon verloor.

Gerhard Odendaal (Vaatjie) verloor ‘n hele 8.5 kg in net 7dae

Dit is veral Vaatjie, wat altesaam 8,5 kg in sewe dae verloor het (en daarna nog 3,5 kg met tweede siklus) wat baie ingenome is met die resultaat. Vaatjie is groot nuus nadat Huisgenoot berig het dat hy op die jong ouderdom van 29 jaar ‘n pasaangeer moes kry. Die dokter het gesê hy moet ten minste 40 kg afskud as hy seker wil maak dat hy sy eersteling, wat in Januarie verwag word, wil sien grootword. Vir hom is dit dus lewensbelangrik dat hy die ekstra gewig so gou en veilig as moontlik moet afskud.

Toe hy na die program by die huis in Kempton aankom, was sy vrou Chantell se eerste woorde “Liefie maar jy lyk ongelooflik”. Vaatjie se gewigsverlies was veral sigbaar aan sy gesig en sy maag. Op navraag oor hoe hy voel het hy met ‘n glimlag gesê “fantasties”.“Ek mag nou nog ‘n Vaatjie wees, maar kort voor lank beplan ek om soos ‘n Griekse god te lyk – eat your heart out Gerrie en Kurt” het hy laggend bygevoeg. Vaatjie is opgewonde oor die 12 kg wat hy sover verloor het en sê die nuwe eetpatroon en leefstyl werk beslis vir hom.

Kurt het tydens die 7 dae 6.8 kg en Gerrie en Hennie albei 5 kg elk verloor. Le Roux, het 8,3 kg verloor en Lloyd 5.6 kg. Laasgenoemde word as uitstekend beskou aangesien vroue klaarblyklik moeiliker gewig verloor en die vorige proefkonyne nie meer as 4 kg verloor het nie.

Suiker vlak en bloeddruk onder beheer, sonder dat enige medikasie daarvoor geneem is.

Le Roux, ‘n diabeet, het binne die eerste dag opgehou om sy daaglikse insulien te spuit. Hierdie besluit is saam met dr Johan Ferreira, wat deurgangs die deelnemers gemonitor het, geneem. Na afloop van die program is Le Roux se suiker en bloeddruk onder beheer, sonder dat hy enige medikasie daarvoor neem.

Eetpatroon reeds 35 jaar gelede gebruik om mediese ondersoeke vir vlieglisensie te slaag

Maar waar kom die eetpatroon vandaan? Strydom het bykans 35 jaar gelede toe hy ‘n vlieginstrukteur was, die basis vir die eetpatroon by ’n Indiese mediese dokter, wat ook ‘n vlieënier was, gekry. Strydom vertel dat hy en sy mede vlieëniers destyds maar goed kon eet en kuier . Die ses maandelikse mediese ondersoeke was vir hulle ‘n nagmerrie omdat hulle van die oortollige vetjies moes ontslae raak voordat hulle die medies kon slaag. Die dokter het die die eetpatroon in breë trekke vir hom neergeskryf en die jongklomp het dit as ‘n “wonderwerk” beskou om elke keer hul medies te slaag.

Deur die jare het Strydom half daarvan vergeet totdat een van die argitekte wat by sy bou-projekte betrokke is so drie jaar gelede vir hom van ‘n sop gebasseerde dieet vertel het wat vir hom werk. Strydom het weer die oorspronklike dieet opgespoor en begin om dit op homself en sy vriende te toets. Die resultate was deurgangs goed, maar nadat hy dit verfyn en voedsel byvoegings gemaak het, het hy die eetpatroon op ‘n basis waar hy die stelling maak dat mans tussen 5 en 9 kg binne 6 dae kan verloor en dit afhou.

Grootste sondebokke in ons daaglikse dieet is suiker en graanprodukte.

Twee van die groot sondebokke in ons daaglikse dieet is suiker en graanprodukte en albei is taboe met Strydom se eetpatroon. Hierdie stelling word ook sterk deur die bekende prof Tim Noakes van die Universiteit van Kaapstad ondersteun. Volgens hom is die oormatige inname van koolhidrate en graanprodukte skadelik vir menslike grbruik. Hy beweer dat protein eintlik ‘n eetlus demper is en skryf dit toe aan die feit dat té hoë inname van protein giftig is vir die mens. Die resultate hiervan is dat lae koolhidraat diëte met ‘n toename in protein veroorsaak dat ‘n mens nie honger voel nie.

“Dit is presies wat hier gebeur” beaam Strydom. Die eetpatroon is ryk aan vrugte en groente en protein in die vorm van rooivleis. Slegs op twee geleenthede gedurende die sewe dae word koolhidrate in die vorm van aartappels en bruinrys toegelaat. Na afloop van die program het al die deelnemers getuig dat hulle nooit honger geword het nie.

Gewigsverlieskursuse ook nou in Grootbrak Rivier in die Tuinroete aangebied

“Hierdie groep was die proefkonyne en ek is baie tevrede” het Strydom aan Lalakoi Publishing gesê. Volgens hom word kursusse by Bains Game Lodge en by Riversyde Manor op Groot-Brak aangebied. “Dit is baie makliker om die aanvanklike kursus in groepsverband onder die toesig van ‘n dokter te doen, veral as daar deelnemers op medikasie is. Ons hou die deelnemers ook aktief betrokke met aktiwiteite soos wildbesigtigings, 4 x 4 ekskursies, masserings en kuiertyd” het hy bygevoeg.

“Na afloop van die 7-dae kursus kan ‘n mens teruggaan om normaal, maar gesond te eet en indien jy nog gewig wil verloor, dan gaan jy weer op die kursus” het Strydom bygevoeg. Hy het beklemtoon dat die deelnemers nog vir ses maande na afloop van die aanvanklike kursus gemonitor word.

By navraag het al die deelnemers gesê dat hulle nooit honger geword het nie.“Wel belustig” het Kurt bygevoeg. Al die deelnemers sal nou gemonitor word om seker te maak dt hul resultate so bly en dat hulle die gesonde eetpatroon volg en hul gestelde teikens bereik.

Southern Cape Finalist for Mrs. SA Title, Dianne Erasmus from Great Brak River loves the outdoors and animals- a Real Greenie

One of the two Southern Cape finalists for the Mrs SA 2011 title, Dianne Erasmus (30) from Great Brak is a real “greenie”. She loves the outdoors, has a passion for animals and is forever exploring new avenues to make her environment and surroundings more eco friendly. “I’m a nature girl who enjoys a wholesome life” she describes herself.

Function Venue and Restaurant near Great Brak River

She loves challenges and the latter is playing a huge role in her latest venture, a function venue and restaurant Yellowoods that she and her husband Carl opened on 1 October on their game range. The venue is a beautifully restored building, known as one of the oldest in the district and it is situated on the restant of the Botlierskop farm. The ranch will soon also house a buffalo sanctuary which will have the largest number of privately owned buffalo in the country.

Church Groups will be invited to make use of the beautiful naturally formed amphitheatre on the ranch

“As soon as the accommodation tents and chalets adjacent to the restaurant is erected and the ablution facilities completed, we will be extending an invitation to particularly church groups to make use of the beautiful naturally formed amphitheatre on the ranch. People will then be able to organise religious rallies and bring the whole family to camp out along the river and in the beautiful valleys” she said.

Dianne loves to experiment with new and innovative ideas in catering.

Dianne and her husband Carl, better known as “Elvis” after winning an Elvis competition in Las Vegas (best voice second to Elvis) way back in 2001, and their two daughters, Isabella (9) and Simone (6) moved to Great Brak during December 2010. Carl is a game farmer and has been in the industry since 1993. During 2000 he and Dianne became involved in the tourism aspect of game farming and they both believe that if hunting is regulated and controlled, it helps to conserve the different species. She became involved in the catering and hosting side of the industry and love to experiment with products to come up with new and innovative ideas to present dishes to the visitors.
At the new venue Dianne uses their own organically grown vegetables, they catch the rain water for use in the restaurant and use local ingredients available from the area. All the rubbish is disposed of in a natural way and the electricity comes from solar panels. “We all have to do our bit to conserve the earth’s resources” she added.
In Mozambique she was also involved in a project to supply shoes to the children of the country. “It is awesome to see a child’s face after he has received a pair of shoes – the first ever in his life!” she added.

Dianne also has a passion to help other people and also gets involved in community projects

As one of 16 finalists Dianne has to get involved in community projects. She has already started working on one for the Penguin Sanctuary outside Mossel Bay and she is involved in the small mission town of Friemersheim. Another cause that she has committed herself to is that of raising funds for the second stem cell transplant for Zac Bruwer, a two year old boy from Mossel Bay that contracted brain damage after a motoristed motor gate fell on him. Dianne met up with his mother when the evangelist Dr Fergus Buchan, visited the Southern Cape and she organised for a visit to Zac.
On 8 November Dianne and the other Mrs SA finalists will attend a dinner at the Kalahari Theatre. Carl and another Great Brak resident, Marius du Bruyn will be performing in “Double Booking”. The show revolves around the double booking on the same date for two of the greats, Elvis (Carl) and Neil Diamond (Marius). Both rock up at the venue to find the other one booked it. However they decide to make the best of the bad scenario and it is hilarious to see them together on stage.
